Here is a new sculpt for 2012. This week i am trying to work on improving my sculpture so i have set up a personal class schedule for myself. I am trying to improve my originality and concepts as well as textures. I have been mostly self taught with watching videos and a couple specialized class sessions so i looked into what i want to improve and here is my idea. I am setting up to do a 3 hour sculpt and complete a character. This isn't for speed, but rather setting deadlines and allowing myself to figure out how long i have to complete each phase. For this piece i blocked it in for 30 min. then worked on refining the forms for the next hour and a half. Left the last hour for detailing him. I didn't get him finished, but i am happy with how far i got and the character. He is approx. 1/2 scale and i just went in with a basic idea of a hybrid creature. Tonight i will be doing another piece in the same manner and then reviewing the progress and improvement points.

Starting blocking in my new display piece. Here i am approx. 3 hrs on each character. The female lead is shaping up nicely, i have her basic structure and features in place. There are a few proportion and symmetry issues, but overall it is a good start. As for the creature he is taking a little longer to shape up due to the size of him. I have the basic forms and need a lot more before he starts looking like something. Stay tuned for more as i continue to work on this.

Forbidden Love

New concept for an upcoming piece. For a while now i have wanted to do a piece that incorporated more than one head and had more of a story to the piece. I came up with this forbidden love piece with a reaper creature and a strong female character.
I have always loved fantasy art and the dynamic between beauty and the beast. I have been inspired by the works of Luis Royo and James Ryman and many others that have a strong female lead using their strength and beauty to control the beast. Also the 80's horror classics always have a strong female lead, Nancy defeats freddy - Lauri defeats Myers, etc.

As for this piece both the monster and the girl will be strong pieces on their own, but will work great together. For the creature I want to make him into a grim reaper and use burlap mixed with latex to make the hood. (Spoke to Pete Infelise at the devils workshop when i purchased his Mr. Grimm mask and have been dying to try the technique) For the female character she is going to be strong, beautiful, tough, and fearless. For the paintwork I will try out a few different versions - one as a human and another as a vampire. Also would like to do a werewolf bust that interacts with the girl for a red riding hood version.

Update: i have worked out the expression and am happy with the way he is turning out. The angle of the head is slightly lowered down, more anger or disgust in his eyes. I also started detailing his chest and shell area. He is coming along nicely now, more detailing on the way, then he off to molding.

Just started working on a new bust this week. Another ninja turtle piece, the third piece out of four different expressions. For this one i wanted to go slightly larger and i also want to make him rougher and more realistic with skin textures and scars. Here is the progress i have so far.

Here is a quick sculpture of tiny from killer klowns from outer space. I am trying to get his likeness and am planning on making an oversized mask of this character. I am going to use real hair and real fabric for the collar. I am also planning on making him pop up out of pizza boxes to duplicate one scene in the movie.

Chiller Theatre on Halloween

On halloween i drove up to new jersey to visit the chiller theatre horror convention. This is one of the biggest shows that has been around for years. This year it was packed. There were a lot of great vendors and some really interesting work. I did not have a table for this one, but will try to do it next year. Here are some pics it took while at the con.

Ric Frane is another artist that has amazing works. He paints with oils and is located in wilmington, DE. Not to far from me. He owns his own frame shop and has a gallery.

DCAD Drawathon

I attended the drawathon at DCAD this past saturday and here is what i got. There was a few models there to draw from and the gallery was open from 9 to 9. I started early and stayed until around 7. With this piece i started off with one model and as i moved around and the models shifted i started doing new faces incorporating them into the piece.

Clown mold

Here is a breakdown of my process for setting up my molds. I believe that everyone should learn from everybody and adapt it into your own way of doing things. For molding i have learned from mark alfreys videos, jordu schells video, and john browns video. I have taken what works for me from each one and here is how i do it.

First i use foamcore to make a wall close to the sculpture. With laying it on its back i dont make as much of a mess and i dont waste plaster. Just making a mold wall and doing the back half first the plaster drips a lot and doesn't pile up as much on the sculpture. By doing it this way the plaster that drips off drips into the mold wall which i have pictured later. For the back of the head i lay it on some clay wrapped in plastic wrap so the back of the sculpture does not get damaged. I have foamcore strips standing up for support and planks across to hold the clay wall. Everything is put together with hot glue.

This picture shows how if i need extra support in a area how i use small triangles to strenghen the wall.

Here i have made the clay wall on top of the foam and around the outside where i want the wall to stop i have made a clay wall. Here you can see how when the plaster drips off the face it will not be wasted and the wall of the mold can be made thicker much easier.

The next steps i did not get to take a picture of, but what i do is i mix up the plaster and do two coats. One detail coat and one with burlap for strength. Then turning the mold over i put vaseling on the plaster wall to make sure the mold comes apart and do the same to the other side.

Painting a halloween mask

Here is a new alien mask i finished painting. I took some pictures along the way.

Here is the finished sculpt of my alien character.

My first step was a base coat of blue, then i did a noodling pattern with a darker blue shown above.

Next i did the same with a violet. With every new color i use i do the noodling and then go in and add shadows and more depth to the features.

The next step is to do a tight noodling of white over the entire mask. (Sorry i forgot to get a detail shot after i painted this step.)

Below are finished images of my new mask. The last steps are to take the original blue color used as a base coat and put a thin layer over my white layer to give transparency to the skin.
I put a clear coat over the whole mask, then for painting the eyes i did a base of yellow and used a brush to add the red veining to the sides. I airbrushed the pupils black and outlined with white. The final touch was to add five minute epoxy to the eyes, nose, and mouth. The five minute epoxy will make the eyes look wet and alive.

Monster mania con august 2009

Just got back from monster mania 2009. This year i had a booth to myself and overall had a great experience.

This is my original setup. It started this way on friday evening. By the end of the day and the weekend i put out a lot more masks covering the table.

Here are two of the newest masks i finished. The two aliens on the ends are my new favorite and i got a lot of good comments from people on them.

I got comments from being original with my designs. I spoke with Bob from fuckedupstuff.com, kreation x (pictured below), the guy in charge of the national haunters convention, guy in charge of monsterpalooza and a few others. I got my work out there and got some connections.

Another sketch i completed while i was at the show, considering trying to make a t-shirt in the future.

Space Girl and alien creature

Space Girl sculpture. Here is the head i started in figure class off of Julia. I added the chest earlier this week and finished off her clothes. I added a top with some wrinkles and her hat, the two spots that stick out are for her pigtails which will be real hair.

This is a new alien bust i just finished. I made the mold and am currently casting it in latex.

I just finished both of these sculptures and am currently making a casting of both of them. Hopefully i will finish them and have them at the show this weekend. I have a table at monster mania, a horror convention in cherry hill NJ this weekend. So far i have been working hard trying to finish enough stuff for the show. Female werewolf from figure drawing

Here is the finished sculpture for my wolf mask i started last week at my figure drawing session. The overall feeling is stronger in this version.

On tuesday i moved onto Julia. I brought some reference pictures of wolves and tried to get a likeness of her into a wolf. Here is the progress so far.

New portrait from figure drawing class

Here is a pic of my new sculpt from this weeks figure session. For this one i tried to do a creature or werewolf with some likeness to the model. I am currently trying to get my things together for the horror convention coming up in New Jersey so this is going to be a halloween mask for that. I am not happy with the front view of this piece. Still in progress we'll see what happens when i finish. Let me know your opinions.

Here is another little figure i just started working on. This figure is approx. 6 inches tall and i am using chavant clay. My idea here is to make a cute artist figure that will be blank. Then they can be painted special or they can be cast plain for a smooth look.

New demon mini bust

Here is a finished pic of my new sculpture. This is suppose to be a female demon. I started this one when i was on vacation with nothing special in mind. The head is finished and ready to be molded. I am now going to work on getting the horns right and then molding them. The head will be cast in latex and filled with foam. The horns will be resin and foam. Will let you see when i am finished.

My next sculpting projects are to finish my old ones and do some demos. Next tuesday i will have a figure drawing session with the same model as last week. Then the following week we will have Julia again, so my plan is to create two oversized halloween masks. I am going to try to do a male and female werewolf or creature in the middle of transformation. This way i will be able to get basic structure and likeness from the model and the creature from other references. Thats the plan lets see how it works out.

Here is anther portrait from tonights figure drawing class. For this one i made it slightly larger than life size. I started off trying to get the basic structure and then went for an emotion. To finish this piece i am going to try to add more evil and horror, then i will make it into a halloween mask. Will post pics when i get further.

I am currently working on some videos to put on youtube. I am doing some airbrush work and i will be doing sculpting. If anyone has any ideas they might like to see i am open to suggestions. i will start out with filming my quick sketches in clay which are 20-30 mins sculpts and then bits and pieces of other sculptures.

New portrait sculpture from class

This is a new sculpture i just finished for scupting class. I had a week long intensive session with John Horn at PAFA. We worked from a model for five days. Overall it was a good class, i was forced to do a few things i never done before and focused on the structure and the planes of the face. The first day we had to make a head armature, which i hate using, then we did a generic skull with planes. On the second day we started from the model. Another thing i found amazing is how much larger the male head is to the female. My first measurements fromt the generic skull were from the male model we had. Then the class split up and i decided to work from the woman. The male model was not a large man, but to scale my head down for the female i had to lose at least 5-10 pounds of clay. These exercises really help me understand the structure better. Comments and critiques welcome.

This is the finished girl skull scultpure. I just finished making a mold and will be casting soon. This will be casted in latex and filled with foam. This is about 1/3 life size and was sculpted from the model. The model favored one side towards me which gave me the idea to only have one side a finished face.

Here is another mini bust i have been working on. I am happy with the character and the way it looks right now. I need to finish up some texture wrinkles then it will be ready to mold.

This last mini bust is still in progress. I came up with the idea while sculpting. Next step is to figure out what to do with the mouth.

Mold process

This first image shows how i prop the head up so it will be as horizonal as possible.

When making a two piece mold you will have to find a line and make a wall so the mold will be able to come apart when your done. This line will be where the mold comes apart.

Here is another view. I use foamcore for the wall so that i don't have to use too much clay for the build up.

Here i started covering the foamcore with clay to make the clay wall.

Here i added a wall around the sculpture so that the plaster will not run off the edge. It helps to keep the sides thick and strong for when you pry apart the two mold halves.

Here the first half of the mold has been made and the second half is being prepped. I have made another wall to catch the plaster and applied vasoline to the plaster edge so the plaster on the back will not stick to the front half.

Here are a few new designs i finished. I have been trying to do more, but i am also working on my sculpture right now. I have signed up for a class at the pennsylvania academy in portrait sculpture. Taking this class will help me learn more about portrait sculpting and help me do better in my own projects. I have also been working on my website. I am trying to add a store and make some of my art available as prints. Thanks for looking.

Here are a couple new sculptures i have been working on. These are creature designs that i am currently working on.

This is a portrait sculpture i worked on tuesday at figure drawing class. I am not sure if i am going to do anything with this one yet.

This study is from the previous tuesday at figure drawing class. I was in a position where i was getting interesting poses, but she favored one side towards me. It gave me the idea to only work on one side of the models face so here it is. I would like to finish this one and make it into a mini bust. Hopefully i will be able to create a couple of different paintjobs and add some hair to the female side.

New creature concepts

I have been working on some new concepts. I haven't done any new paintings or sculptures so here is what i have been up to. I really like what i can get with working on brown kraft paper. These are all black and white pencil on kraft paper. I order the sheets online, if you get a roll you'll never get it to lay flat. My next step is to make a few creature busts in latex and filled with foam. I am thinking of doing of doing a series of half life size creatures like this. I am also going to keep these concepts coming so i can figure out a good composition for some more airbrush paintings. Enjoy the art.

Here are some of the new works i have completed. It has been a while since my last post so here is some new works. Currently i have been doing some sketches and trying to come up with some concepts. the national haunters convention

These are a couple of pics i took while i was at the haunters convention at the valley forge convention center. It was really interesting with all the vendors with products for haunted houses and owners. There was also a coulple of artists that had amazing work. It was well worth the trip between being inspired by this amazing work and meeting a great artist who gave me some helpful tips. The zombies were from www.gcustomprops.com, the wolves were a massive display by www.nightscreamstudios.com. The artist i met was David Quiles at www.dquiles.com.

Here is the portrait i had from a figure drawing session, i have worked on it further refining the face and fixing the hair. I still have a lot to do with her, but i like the direction. I really have to work on the base and maybe add her chest to balance out the bottom of the sculpture.

I am still trying to get faster and more accurate so here is another 1hr sculpt. I like the way this one is shaping out so i think i will take this one further.

This is an old concept that i just started sculpting. I really liked the design and i have also noticed a lot of people who visit my site have seen this on google images. I just started so its just a block in so far, but i will post more as soon as i can. Tell me what you think so far.

I am trying to get better at sculpting. One thing i am trying to work on currently is working smaller and faster. Here are a few sculpts that are half life size and that took me one hour. I have set a time limit for myself therefore forcing myself to work faster.

I have been trying to do some figure drawing sessions whenever possible. On tuesday night i attended another three hour session and this first sculpt is what i created. Its not too bad for only a few hours. The second sculpt is a new character bust i am working on.

Yesterday i was looking at conceptart.org and noticed another amazing artist that really inspired me to do my best. He doesn't have a blog or website i could find, but i did find an ablum on myspace.

Here is the current image i am working on. I am trying to work on making more illustrations rather than just doing character designs. This is just a work in progress at the moment, i am still deciding on what to do with the background.

Here is the wolf bust i am also working on. It has been a while since i posted on this, but i just finished a little more on this sculpt which i will post soon. I have made a silicone mold of the ears and i am finishing the mold for the teeth at the moment. After i finish it i will cast the ears and teeth in resin and post the progress. Another idea i have for this piece is to angle the neck more and cut the back off so it will look more like a trophy head for a wall mount. Tell me what you think.

Figure drawing session

On tuesday i went to an open figure drawing session to try to get some practice. Here are some of the better ones, most of them i was trying to do gesture and quick sketches. It was good to draw from life and the model, but i could tell i was a little rusty. Hopefully i will be able to attend more of these sessions in the future. Next saturday march 7th DCAD is hosting another drawathon so i will be there hopefully getting more work done at a better quality. You never stop learning.

New Creature Designs

It has been a little while since i posted so here is what i have been working on. Right now i am trying to work on a portfolio i can be proud of. I am trying to make one geared towards concept/creature designs and illustration. The only issues i am having right now is getting better at drawing female faces with expression and coming up with compositions. I have no issues with coming up with new characters and i can toss them into an environment, but really making them work and interacting with other characters or nature im lacking. So thats on the agenda for now. Here are some of the new works i have been doing, this first one is the cover to my sketchbook. Tell me what you think.

A creature concept that i did with no prior thought. I just attacked a blank page.
This is a robot character that i came up with. Here i did my usual method of just scribbling and making shapes with a marker or pen on tracing paper or copy paper.

This concept started from an image of a dog. I have some reference pictures and i saw an interesting one of a dog. I am not sure what the breed was, but it was the brown ones with wrinkles.
